Tues 4/15/08 - Spring Anime Season So Far Posted by nike13
This season, I wish to sample all the different anime that are coming out, at least 1 episode of the ones I can get my hands on between courseworks. That being said, I thought I might share my opinions with the rest of you (unless I am told you don't want to hear, which is fine too). These are by no means full blown reviews, just thoughts or comments on the anime I've been watching. And yes, since I am a girl, my choices are a bit towards the shoujo side of things (and yes, there's ecchi here too).
Blassreiter - Stopped
Now I wanted to give this show a serious try partly because this was one of the two anime that were being released and subbed by their production company FOR FREE online. For those that didn't know GONZO decided to launch 2 of its new anime (Blassreiter and Tower of Duraga) on television and online simultaneously basically to test the waters of online publication. Personally, I'm 100% for this idea. I don't like the fact that the companies that are based in my country have a choice on what anime I can get my hands on legally and I personally will be adding a donation to GONZO to show my support for this idea regardless of how I feel for the anime cause I want to see more companies offer this.
That being said, I just couldn't get interested in this anime. Sure there was death and explosions right at the start, not to mention hints of mecha but that died down and what I was left with was self pity that, although was understandable, just bored me to the point where the fight after that didn't bring me back to the story. It was nice but not something I'm going to continue.
Itazura na Kiss - Watching
I'm up to episode 2 and I have to say I'm laughing through this. Its definitely shoujo, and the art is old school shoujo (and by old school I mean 80/90s, like Hana Yori Dango). I like the main girl, she's not perfect but not a ditz either; the love interest is a jerk and I wish to severly hurt him but that doesn't make me stop liking the show. I mean, there was some good old fashioned blackmailing going on in ep 2 that had me giggling maniacly.
Kanokon - watching
Warning! Extreme ecchiness ahead. I mean, seriously, this series is so close to hentai I don't know how it can't be cast as it aside from no actual sex yet. We've got bouncy breasts, furriness included, bath scenes, near male rape, grouping, flashing, and a nude female fight in a bath (with censors naturally) all within the first 2 episodes. Why am I still watching it you ask? Reread that third sentence A girl can't like a little ecchi now and then, right? 18+ advised!
Special A - Watching
Comes across with a certain Ouran Host Club feel to it considering it's about the 7 elite (top) students of the school but for one thing, its not the 6 to 1 male to female ratio I was expecting (OK so I wanted a reverse harem, so shoot me). Hikari is continually being beaten by Kei, in fact he's the only person to ever beat her at anything. And he beats her at everything. And since she's been raised to be the best, she's been competing with him all her life. Now they are in high school, she's the 2nd ranked student in school, Kei the 1st. I've only managed to see one episode and I would really like to judge after I've seen more interaction between the 7 but I do like the girl vs guy bit. It's at least different than the main guy being worshipped by the main girl. Sure it's apparent that Hikari admires Kei but love is a ways off. It's more a friendship at the start of the series. Just be warned, the art is a bit weird with rediculously long/thin legs and arms (I know Ouran had this but SA is even more outrageous).
To-LOVE-Ru - Watching
Another fun ecchi series with fanservice everywhere. Only one episode in but its funny, doesn't take itself seriously and the voices aren't annoying me yet. Poor Rito, our male protagonist, has the worst luck when trying to confess to the one he loves but I still couldn't help laughing I also found it funny when Lala transformed into her clothes, lets just say tentacles+'oooh ahhh'-rape+sparkles.
On a special note, I have been told that this is different than the manga, so if you prefer your anime in sinque with the manga source, you might not want to watch this. Course the jury is still out on whether the changes are for the benefit of the show.
Tower of Druaga - Watching...maybe
First episode parodied just about every cliche known to me about MMOs and general RPGs. Course that isn't what the anime is about, it was a prelude to the series, like just a joke on what the series is really about, an adventure story about an unlikely hero. Course, you won't find out if that's true until episode 2, which I still haven't seen. I'm hoping for more comedy and the OP has me confused but oh well. I'll be watching ep 2 as soon as this week's work is done.
Vampire Knight - Watching
This one has been blogged about a lot and really looked forward to by lots of fans of the manga (myself included). I'm happy to say that the first episode did not disappoint. Some minor things are different which doesn't bother me, especially since this feels like it won't drag on much in terms of plot development. I just hope that it won't run out of plot and put in fillers after a really good start. Artwork was pretty and matched the manga appropriately And there was plenty of bishonen.
i thought to love-ru was funny as heck and had to be one of the best comedies i've seen in years of anime. ( aside from "they are my noble masters" and "rosario + vampire")
I'm looking forward to seeing that one too, the subs were just really hard to read on Crunchyroll so I was waiting for the torrent to finish ^^ Now I'm waiting til I finish my hw
