The Club for those who have an Interest in melee weapon design and use....
and for those like me, who are just plain obsessed with them.
Now if your starting out with thinngs like weapon design, heres some basic sword info for you..
-Balence-
The point of balance(the point in witch the weapon will balence itself) in a blade will determin its use.
EG. the spanish rapier is a light thin blade, made for defending and peirceing, so the blade MUST be lighter then the hilt, otherwise it will become useless. this is why rapeirs often have very decrative hilts.
basicly said, the point of ballence desides weather the blade will be suited to slicing of pircing. and the total weight also has a great deal of say in this, the heaver the weapon itself, the more power that can be pushed behind it, but this makes it harder to defend with.
depending on the intended use of the weapon the weight and point of balence detirmin everything.
-Shape-
the shape of a blade will also have a large effect on the weapons function, overly decarive blades may look 'cool' but generaly tend to be useless.
simple patterns and shapes on a blade can greatly add the the blades funtion.
EG. a wave like shape along a blade can do a hell of a lot of damage in a slashing motion, as the waves will cause many gouges in the flesh, causing a lot of pain.
things like spikes reduse the slashing power somewhat, but can cause a great deal of pain in a pircing attack.
-Flat edge/ Schimitar blades-
A flat edged blade is something along the lines of your basic long sword, A simple balenced blade, this offers simple versatility to the blade. A blade that has one sharp edge and one dulled/ flat edge has a lot of good defending capability. for one, the blade cannot be forced back towards its weilder and if only one blade is being weilded, the weilder can place his or her hand on the flat side of the blade to help defend against heavy impacts. But the lack of symatry does reduce the blades pericing ability and requires the weilder to align the sharps edge of the blade before every stirke, witch can shave presious milliseconds away.
